Belfast visitor numbers on the increase
The number visitors coming to Belfast and staying overnight rose by 21% in 2004, the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau (BVCB) revealed today.
The figures, which take visitor numbers to almost 863,000, are based on initial findings taken between January and September this year and show a marked increase in incoming tourism from the rest of the UK.
Scottish visitors have more than doubled in number on the same period in 2003, while visitors from England and Wales have increased by 13%.
Councillor Nelson McCausland, Chair of Belfast City Council’s Tourism and Promotion of Belfast sub-committee, said: “It is clear that more people than ever are choosing to come to Belfast and to stay overnight in the city. Each year, we are seeing a marked increase in the number of visitors coming into Belfast and the figures announced today are excellent news for encouraging new developments in the tourism infrastructure.
“With the growth of new hotels, shopping outlets and visitor attractions across the city, we have a continually improving tourism product, encouraging further economic and social regeneration.”
2004 was one of the busiest years for tourism in the city with 48 conferences and nine cruise ships bringing business and leisure tourists into Belfast. This is set to increase next year with even greater numbers of conferences and 15 cruise ships visiting the city.

New signs make it easier for visitors to Belfast
