Police warning as another device found in Belfast store

Belfast shoppers have been asked to remain vigilant following a spate of security alerts at stores across the city in recent weeks.

The latest alert occurred on Wednesday when an incendiary device was discovered concealed in clothing on the first floor of the Primark department store at Castle Street/Royal Avenue.

It was eventually made safe and taken away for examination by forensic scientists.

Duncan McCausland, Assistant Chief Constable for Belfast, confirmed that extra patrols would be on the streets of Belfast in the run up to the festive season.

He said: “I hope that the extra patrols will work to disrupt criminal activity and help ensure that Belfast City Centre is a safer place to live, work and, importantly at this time of year, to shop.”

Mr McCausland also condemned the actions of those responsible for the recent devices saying they put lives and property at risk.

“We would advise business owners and managers to review security measures and check premises thoroughly both during and after trading. An extra few minutes could make a difference,” he added.

Meanwhile, PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde has said that the threat from dissident republicans remains real, if disorganised, following the recent spate of attacks in Belfast.

Mr Orde was speaking in Dublin alongside Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy where they jointly announced the receipt of more than £300,000 from the European Union to help fund joint PSNI and Garda programmes.

Both men said the fight against dissidents, who are now largely involved in criminality, would continue.
