Bangor Library to get £2 million overhaul

More than £2 million is to be invested into one of Northern Ireland’s oldest and most popular libraries.

Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister, Angela Smith, said the investment at Bangor Library, which is almost 100 years old, would bring facilities up to modern day standards and into the 21st Century.

Ms Smith said: “The library’s current accommodation is far from adequate in the 21st century.

“At present, the ground floor houses its lending and reference sections along with a computer suite, but the overall standard of accommodation, including floor areas, falls well short of recognised limits. In addition, the first floor of the building cannot be used because of fire regulations.

“I am pleased to have been able to identify, from within my Department’s existing resources, £2 million in capital funding, which will come on stream in the 2006/07 financial year.

“This will enable the refurbishment of part of the building and provide a new permanent extension. The work will take 18 months to complete and will be finished in good time for its centenary celebrations in 2009.”

With over 21,000 members borrowing nearly 210,000 items each year, Bangor Library, which is situated in the Carnegie Building in the town’s Hamilton Road, has the largest membership and lending rate in the South Eastern Education and Library Board area.
