Six-year-long Saville Inquiry concludes today
Six years, 900 witnesses and at a cost in excess of £150 million, the Saville Inquiry into the events on Bloody Sunday will come to an end at Derry's Guildhall today.
Counsel to the inquiry Christopher Clarke QC will finish delivering his brief summary of the evidence in a closing speech he began on Monday which will bring an end to the investigation into the deaths of 14 civilians shot by soldiers during a civil rights march in Derry on January 30, 1972.
Mr Clarke said on Monday that it was still unclear which soldiers shot 27 civilians on Bloody Sunday and that the central question was why and how civilians were killed or wounded on that fateful day 32 years ago.
The inquiry began to hold public hearings in March 2000 and has now sat for 433 days, hearing evidence from 921 witnesses as well as considering 1,555 written statements from witnesses.
The inquiry has heard evidence from leading politicians, including the then Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, civilians, policemen, soldiers and IRA members.
The Saville Inquiry’s final report and conclusions are not expected to be made public until next summer.

Army Job Cuts Announced
Around 120 soldiers based in Northern Ireland are to lose their jobs. The positions will go during the next 18 months as part of the Army's restructure plans. There are no plans to close any military bases or training facilities although the troop levels will fall to 2,000.

Bloody Sunday Appeal Renewed
The PSNI has renewed an appeal for witnesses of Bloody Sunday to come forward, as the force prepares to take statements from over 1,000 people who were there on the day. Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have also appealed for those who gave evidence to the Saville Inquiry to make contact with them.

Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, has announced a decision to establish an independent inquiry under the Inquiries Act 2005 into the murder of Patrick Finucane. The 39-year-old solicitor was shot dead at his home in front of his wife and children by loyalist paramilitaries in February 1989.

Call For Public Inquiry Into Dalradian Gold Mine Projects
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has called on the Planning Appeals Commission to launch a Public Inquiry into the Dalradian Gold Mine projects. Making the call, Minister Mallon said: "In June 2020 I announced that the Dalradian Gold Mine project at Greencastle, County Tyrone would be the subject of an independent Public Inquiry.
