Gas leak alert ends in Newtownards
A gas leak in the centre of the Co Down town of Newtownards caused major disruption to rush-hour traffic yesterday.
Part of Newtownards was cordoned off on Monday while engineers for Phoenix Natural Gas worked to repair the leak after a mains supply pipe was damaged at around 4pm by a contractor working at Hardford Link on the Glenford Road.
The police evacuated a number of homes and businesses in the area as a precautionary measure, however residents were eventually allowed to return home a few hours later following repairs to the supply pipe.
Tuesday’s leak follows a similar alert in August when a full scale emergency was declared after workmen hit an underground gas pipeline in west Belfast.
