Childhood programmes bring communities together
Early childhood programmes are playing a critical role in bringing communities together after periods of conflict throughout the world, Education Minister Barry Gardiner said today.
Mr Gardiner was speaking as he opened the World Forum on Early Years Care and Education conference in Belfast on Friday.
Speaking at the international conference the Minister said: “This conference is providing all the different nations represented here the opportunity to share their experiences, to learn from each other and ultimately to take back and use what is learnt here. From this we can begin to make the improvements we are striving for in each of our own communities.”
The international delegates had an opportunity to visit various early years projects throughout the province, including the Ardmonagh Family and Childcare Centre, Upper Springfield, Belfast and the ‘Partnership in Practice’ project in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh as part of the event.
The four-day international conference is a project of the World Forum Foundation in partnership with NIPPA – The Early Years Organisation, and NIPPA view it is an opportunity to showcase positive work happening at grass roots level in the province.

A Belfast man has been jailed for 27 years after admitting to a horrific catalogue of child sex abuse. David Andrews, 55, pleaded guilty to 130 charges, including attempted rape and sexual communication with a child. The offences involved 47 victims, 46 of whom were children.
