Firefighters rescue two people from burning flat

Two people have been rescued from a fire at a flat in Co Antrim early this morning.

The blaze at the flat in Tiree Street was discovered just after 2am when the residents became trapped inside.

When they rang 999 a Fire Brigade Controller advised them to close the bedroom door and put a duvet along the bottom of it to keep out the smoke.

Fire crews arrived soon after wearing breathing equipment and rescued them. The pair have been treated for the affects of smoke inhalation.

Elsewhere overnight, three men have been arrested after a man was hit over the head with a metal bar during a robbery in south Belfast.

The incident occurred when a gang, one of whom had a metal bar, approached the man as he walked along Fitzroy Avenue with another man and woman at around 2am.

There was a scuffle and one of the men tried to steal the woman's handbag.

One man received a gash to the head and the woman sustained a badly bruised arm.
