'Village' area youth take charge of their future
A youth strategy for the Village area of south Belfast was launched today by the Department for Social Development.
Speaking at Donegall Road Methodist Complex, Permanent Secretary Alan Shannon congratulated those who had been involved in developing the strategy, which was part of a larger £90,000 Rationale for Youth initiative, funded by the Local Community Fund, that aims to address problems in areas of weak community infrastructure.
Mr Shannon said: “The project is an excellent example of how the Local Community Fund’s objectives can be delivered. While the strategy is primarily about benefiting the youth of the area, the wider community will also see real improvements in terms of building community capacity and leadership.”
Acknowledging the problems faced by the residents of the Village area he added: “I can assure you that the Department for Social Development will continue to work with the Partnership Board and other statutory agencies for the good of all of the people of this area and I have no doubt, with the impressive energy and commitment you have shown to date, that you can succeed in improving the quality of life for the youth in the Village community.”
Taking over six months to compile, the strategy was developed in consultation with the young people and community groups of the Village, by the University of Ulster under the direction of the South Belfast Partnership Board.
The strategy’s action plan covers the areas of health development, youth facilities, community safety, employment, training, education and environment.
