PSNI campign highlights car theft danger

Tackling theft from vehicles is a key component of the Government’s strategy to drive down car crime, Criminal Justice Minister John Spellar said today.

Speaking after the launch of a public information campaign to highlight the threat of theft from vehicles in the run up to Christmas John Spellar said the key message being promoted in the awareness campaign was, 'if they see it they’ll steal it'.

“Leaving valuables visible in your car or van can be an open invitation to thieves,” the Minister said. “By taking simple precautions such as locking property in the boot of a car, you can significantly improve your chances of not becoming a victim of this type of crime.

“This campaign is based on information and evidence from the police about theft from vehicles in Northern Ireland. It will be aimed at hot-spot areas for this type of crime and will inform the public about the types of property that are at the greatest risk.”

Today’s campaign will run until New Year’s Eve comprising radio advertisements, bus shelter posters, classified press advertisements and leaflets and will be targeted at the Greater Belfast area where the majority of thefts occur.

The initiative is being funded by the Community Safety Unit, NIO and will be delivered through the media and jointly by seven PSNI DCUs and four Community Safety Partnerships.
