SDLP councillor fires warning gunshots
An SDLP councillor has admitted firing gun shots above the heads of a gang of men outside a house in Co Antrim.
Danny O'Connor said he used the gun because he feared for his life after the men threw a tar-like substance over his mother's car in Larne.
Mr O`Connor fired four shots into the air from a legally held weapon after the men returned from damaging the vehicle to confront him. They subsequently ran off when he fired the shots however there were no reports of injuries.
Mr O`Connor and his mother have been treated for shock.
Elsewhere overnight, a 16-year-old has been treated in hospital for a fractured skull after being assaulted while on his way home from a school formal in Co Fermanagh.
The teenager, who is said to be in a stable condition, was coming home just after midnight on Sunday when he was attacked outside a hotel on the Tempo Road in Enniskillen.
Police have appealed for anyone with information concerning the incident to contact them.
