Amnesty International director to address Belfast audience
Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen is coming to Belfast next weekend to give a keynote speech on the ongoing ‘war on terror’ by the US Government and its Allies.
Ms Allen is expected to draw comparisons between “internment” in Northern Ireland and the current detention without trial in Guantánamo Bay.
She is also expected to address the broader theme of the effect on millions of people of attacks by non-state groups on civilians and the prosecution of the 'war on terror' by governments.
Despite major concerns regarding US policy with regard to suspect terrorist detention, hundreds of people of around 40 different nationalities remain held without charge or trial at the US Naval Base in Guantánamo Bay in Cuba.
The annual Northern Ireland conference, which will take place on November 20 at Clanmil Housing, Northern Whig House, brings together Amnesty members and activists from around Northern Ireland to debate policy and plan future campaigns.
The organisation has 4,000 members and 12 local branches in the province: Belfast, Foyle, North Down, Mid Down, East Antrim, Newry, Armagh, Craigavon, Omagh, North Atlantic, Mid Ulster and Fermanagh.
