Controlled explosion carried out on suspect device

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a pipe bomb found outside a house in Carryduff in Co Down last night.

The device, which was described by police as "crude but viable", was discovered at around 11pm on Thursday at Muskett Road in Carryduff.

Police have appealed for information and said a number of lines of inquiry were being followed.

Elsewhere, a suspicious object found at a house in Ballymena has been declared a hoax.

It was discovered during police searches in Fisherwick Crescent on Friday morning which where connected to a dissident republican threat against police officers in the town.

Meanwhile, more than 100 children had to be moved to safety from a building in Newtownards because of fears of toxic fumes from a suspected asbestos roof.

The fire broke out at a former car repair shop in Hartford Link on Thursday evening but was eventually brought under control by firefighters.
