Staff evacuated from burning Newtownabbey factory

Staff at an engineering factory in Co Antrim have been evacuated after a fire took hold early this morning.

The blaze at the FG Wilson factory in Newtownabbey broke out at about 4am on Tuesday releasing toxic fumes into the air.

No one is reported to hav ebeen injured however a spokesperson for the fire service said working up close to the burning plastic and cardboard was posed a serious risk to firefighters.

Management at FG Wilson have confirmed that an internal investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the fire.

Elsewhere, police in Londonderry are appealing for information after a distressed woman phoned them early on Tuesday saying she had been attacked and feared she was still in danger. Police say the call was made at around 2.15am on Tuesday from a public telephone box opposite council buildings on Strand Road. They have appealed for anyone who saw a distressed woman in the area or who has any information to contact officers on 028 7136 7337.

Meanwhile, a man has been taken to hospital after being shot in the left leg in Antrim on Monday night. The attack happened just before midnight in the Craighill area of the town.

Two Arrested After Cannabis Factory Find In Co Down
Two people have been arrested after cannabis, worth an estimated street value of £35,000, was discovered in Co Down. A 50-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were arrested following the cannabis factory find in the Bexley Road area in Bangor on Tuesday. Suspected herbal cannabis and plants at various stages of growth were seized.

North Belfast Fire Started 'Deliberately'
A fire at an old factory site in north Belfast was started deliberately, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). Residents had to ensure their windows and doors were closed as firefighters were putting out the blaze in the Oldpark Road area on Wednesday.

Fire crews attacked at Derry fire
Firefighters in Londonderry have been attacked while tackling a fire in the city yesterday evening. It has been reported that fire crews were attending the scene of a gorse fire at Earhart Park in the Shantallow area at around 10.30pm, when they came under attack.

Community Fire Station Opens In Omagh
Public Safety Minister Edwin Poots has opened a new £4.4m Community Fire Station in Omagh, County Tyrone. The new Community Fire Station & District Headquarters on the Killybrack Road includes onsite facilities for firefighter training and transport and engineering workshops.
