SF blame loyalists for weekend trouble

Sinn Fein’s Gerry Kelly has blamed loyalists following a confrontation between rival gangs and police in north Belfast at the weekend.

There were clashes in the Westland Road area of the city on Saturday night after, Mr Kelly claimed, “loyalists entered the Westland Gardens area and began slashing car tyres”.

Mr Kelly said residents confronted the gang “to defend their property” but were confronted by police who responded by using CS spray.

A PSNI spokeswoman said police were confronted by a hostile crowd in the Westland Road area and that they were forced to use CS spray when an officer was surrounded by men with baseball bats.

The incident has been referred to the Police Ombudsman's office.

Elsewhere, a pregnant Portuguese woman and her two-year-old son have escaped injury following a petrol bomb attack at their home in Portadown at the weekend.

The device exploded beside the front window of the house in Ormonde Street, scorching the wall. A tall, thin man in dark clothing was seen running away from the scene of the incident.

Police in Lurgan Road have appealed to people in the area who saw anything suspicious to come forward and are treating the attack as a racist incident.
