Firework explodes injuring boy's hand and face
A 10-year-old Co Antrim boy is being treated in hospital today after being badly injured by a firework that exploded in his hand.
Colin McKay was injured on Monday night when the firework, which he found with a friend in the Poleglass area of west Belfast, went off when he tried to light it.
He suffered serious injuries to his face and hands and has lost his sight. His mother Josie McKay is expected to meet with an eye specialist on Thursday to discuss her son’s condition.
"They are going to have a look and hopefully tell us when he will be able to see again," she said.
"The staff at the hospital have been very supportive - they have been there for us as much as Colin. He is talking - he is actually in very good form."
Staff at Colin’s school, St Kieran's Primary School, said they plan to use pictures of his injuries in a fireworks awareness campaign while his family said they hope the incident would deter others from playing with fireworks.

Man Detained After Injuring Two PSNI Officers During Arrest
Two PSNI officers have been injured as they transported a man to custody. The man, aged in his 40s, had been arrested in connection with a domestic incident in the Ennislare Road area at around 2.45am on Saturday 15 April. As officers transferred the man to custody, he became agitated and aggressive.

Man stabbed in Co Tyrone assault
A man was stabbed and three others injured following an assault in Co Tyrone at the weekend. It is believed that up to eight people tracked the group of three men and one woman as they left a bar in William Street, Dungannon, at around 1.20am on Sunday morning. The group, who were all from Coalisland, were then attacked in Irish Street.

Woman injured during car hijacking
A woman has been injured after her car was hijacked in Co Down yesterday afternoon. The woman was kicked in the stomach and suffered hand injuries after being approached by a gang of three youths wielding baseball bats on the Portaferry Road in Newtownards. The youths escaped in the woman's silver Alfa Romeo car.

Health Minister Welcomes Successful Waiting List Initiative
Health Minister Robin Swann has welcomed a successful initiative that has more than halved the outpatient waiting list for foot and ankle patients. The regional Foot and Ankle (F&A) Waiting List Initiative was launched a year ago following publication of the Elective Care Framework in June 2021.
