SEELB discuss overspend fiasco
Northern Ireland’s education spending fiasco continued today with the news that the South Eastern Education and Library Board is to hold a special meeting in an attempt to solve its funding crisis.
The board had originally said it had a deficit of £5.7 million, however sources indicate this figure is more like to reach £15 million by the end of the year.
At today’s meeting, it is likely the board will be asked to vote on a range of options including cuts in special educational needs staff and transport costs.
Last week the board said that it could only save about £1 million without damaging the welfare of pupils, but it is understood to have now come up with a further list of cost-cutting measures which would save a further £5 million.
This follows last week’s news that the chief executive of the Belfast Education and Library Board had been suspended.
Following a four-hour meeting of the board it was agreed that David Cargo should be suspended after an overspend of nearly £5 million by his region's education department.
In a statement, released on Friday, the BELB said that the board had become aware of the overspend in June and that it had been working since then to clarify the position and discuss a course of action to address the problem.

News that 15 expressions of interest have been lodged with the Department under the Shared Education Campuses Programme has been welcomed by Education Minister John O'Dowd. The Minister launched the Shared Education Campuses Programme in January, with a deadline of 31 March for receipt for expressions of interest.

Belfast Education and Library Board to vote on £4m budget cut
The Belfast Education and Library Board is being asked to approve a number of cuts, estimated to be in the region of £4 million. It is understood that the huge cutbacks have been called for due to falling student numbers in Belfast area schools. Numbers are dropping faster than in any other area in the UK.
