Two men charged over hammer attack

Two men have been charged with a hammer attack on a police officer in Co Armagh on Sunday.

Campbell Jackson, 28, and Barry Allen, 43, both of Cecil Street in Portadown, faced a total of 15 charges when they appeared at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Monday.

The charges relate to an incident on Saturday when police were called to the Thomas Street area of Portadown after a Portuguese man reported damage to his car.

When officers arrived they saw a man being assaulted in a separate incident nearby. After police intervened, one officer was struck on the head with a hammer.

In reply to one of the assault charges during today's proceedings, Mr Jackson replied: "I'm sorry.” He denied the other four charges he faces.

Mr Allen said "No" or made no reply to each of the 10 charges against him.

Both men were remanded in custody until 19 November.
