Plans unveiled to enhance Armagh city centre

A comprehensive plan to restore the centre of Armagh City to its former glory has been launched today.

Among the aims of the Armagh City Centre Integrated Development Plan are the enhancement of public areas and linkages, strengthening of retailing provision and ensuring the involvement of the local community.

Speaking at the Market Place Theatre and Arts Centre, NIO Minister John Spellar congratulated those who had been involved in developing the plan and said that the approach, adopted by Armagh City and District Council, was in line with his department's thinking.

He said: “This plan is the natural first step in a process to revitalise the city centre which has deteriorated over the years. Our vision is to create a vibrant and multifunctional city centre, enhanced in a way that complements its historic character with improved building façades and better traffic management and parking.

“I am pleased that this plan has not only involved input from public representatives, but has also drawn on the wide range of experience within the Armagh City Centre Management Committee.”

The Minister emphasised that implementation of the plan would require close co-operation between local interests, statutory bodies and others. The Department for Social Development, as the lead body for City and Town Centre Regeneration, would assist to facilitate the successful implementation of the plan.

Mr Spellar also announced a public consultation on proposals for environmental improvements in the city centre.

He said: “This is a major programme of environmental improvement works, involving the public areas. It is important that the proposals recognise the historic character of the city and are aimed at complementing the many fine buildings. The works are likely to include enhancing building façades and improvements to the streets, footpaths and public spaces.”

The Minister congratulated the council and its consultants, Colin Buchanan and Partners, on the innovative and integrated approach they had adopted in developing the proposals to this stage.
