Spanish police arrest IRA bombing suspect

Spanish police have arrested a man in connection with the bombing of an army barracks in Lisburn eight years ago.

Michael Gerard Rogan, 44, from Easton Avenue in north Belfast, was arrested in the holiday resort of Playa de las Americas in Tenerife on Monday.

Rogan is suspected of taking part in an IRA bomb attack near Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn in 1996 and was detained on an international arrest warrant after failing to appear at a Belfast court in 1997.

He had originally been charged with conspiring to cause the explosion, but failed to return to court in November of the same year.

He is currently waiting to be transferred to Madrid to face extradition proceedings at the National Criminal Court. However this could be challenged in a Spanish court if he decides to fight the extradition case.
