Unemployment at lowest level on record
The latest labour market figures, released today, show that the unemployment rate in Northern Ireland has fallen to the lowest level on record and is now equal to the UK average.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 4.7% for the period June – August 2004 has fallen from 5% in the previous quarter.
Over the last three months, the number of people claiming benefits has also fallen by 800, though it is up 100 over the month to September 2004. The latest seasonally adjusted claimant count figure stands at 29,700, down 4,900 over the year.
Commenting on the figures, Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner said: “It is good news to see the continuing fall in unemployment. The current rate for Northern Ireland is the lowest on record and is now on a par with the average for the UK.”
As it stands the Northern Ireland unemployment rate (4.7%) is lower than four other UK regions: London (6.9%), the North East (6.0%), Scotland (5.7%) and the West Midlands (5.4%).
