NI hotel visitor numbers increase

The number of people staying in Northern Ireland’s hotels over the past year has increased, according to latest figures.

Last year, there were record visitor figures of 1.95 million and last July hotels had a 55% occupancy rate.

Speaking at the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation Annual ‘Hospitality Exchange’ Conference at Belfast’s Ramada Hotel earlier this week, Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner revealed that the past year's 9% occupancy rate was the highest hotel levels ever recorded in the province.

The Minister said that 2004 "may well be the year when we hit the two million visitors mark. Let’s make this a reality”.

Last April, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board published the Strategic Framework for Action which comprised 10 action areas encompassing the entire spectrum of tourism.

“While the Tourist Board is the strategic leader, the Framework’s success depends on private sector involvement – together we can maximise tourism’s economic potential,” Mr Gardiner concluded.
