New standards in care services announced

Health Minister Angela Smith today announced the start of a consultation period on a wide range of new care standards.

Over 600 people were involved in the development of the draft standards, which cover nursing homes, residential homes, children’s homes, nursing agencies, fostering agencies, domiciliary care agencies and services for children under 12.

Announcing the consultation, the Minister said: “The new standards are an important milestone in the Government’s drive to improve the quality of health and social care in Northern Ireland. They cover some of the most important care services that are provided to vulnerable people in our society - older people and children.”

Commenting on the exercise, the Minister added: “I hope that a wide range of people, particularly those who depend on these services, and their carers, will take this opportunity to let us have their views on the standards.

“The new standards will give people who depend on these services a clearer understanding of the quality of care they can expect to receive. Equally, service providers such as nursing homes, children’s homes and domiciliary care agencies can be confident that the work carried out by the new Registration and Inspection Authority will be based on consistent standards across Northern Ireland.”

The new care standards have been developed in conjunction with key stakeholders in each service area including service providers, users of the services and their representatives, commissioners of services and inspection staff.

Responses will be considered following a consultation period ending on 20 December 2004.
