Chemical spillage sees two taken to hospital

Two people have been taken to hospital after an incident at Queen's University in Belfast, in which hazardous chemicals were released into the air by a laboratory technician disposing of waste materials at the School of Pharmacy.

The McClay Research Centre off the Lisburn Road was the scene of the emergency, which saw four floors of the building filled with a cloud of gas after the worker dropped a bottle of volatile chemicals during routine disposal. The surrounding area was sealed off by emergency services, while the senior technician and another member of personnel working in the laboratory were taken to City Hospital. They were held for observation for several hours before being allowed to go home.

Speaking after the incident, Professor Sean Gorman, Head of the

School of Pharmacy, promised that the university would hold a review into the event. He stated: “In our monitoring of what has occurred today, we will ensure that everything was followed to the letter and indeed it may well need looking at to further improve the situation."
