Murphy discharged from hospital

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Paul Murphy has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at the Labour Party Conference on Tuesday.

Mr Murphy was about to make his speech, later handed out to delegates and journalists, when he collapsed.

A statement by the Northern Ireland Office said: "Mr Murphy felt unwell as he was sitting in the hall just after the Prime Minister's speech and fainted.

"At no time was he unconscious and there's no question of it being a heart attack.”

The 55-year-old was immediately taken out of the conference hall on a stretcher to the nearby Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton.

He was later discharged and ordered to spend the next few days recuperating.

A spokesperson at the hospital said following tests Mr Murphy “was not seriously ill”.
