Minister salutes 'Charity Oscar' winners
Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner joined 400 members of the business, voluntary and community sectors last night to celebrate the 18th NICVA Link awards (the 'Charity Oscars').
The annual gala occasion, at Belfast's Ramada Hotel, is the highlight of the year for local charities and the voluntary and community sector, when they recognise and reward the support of the local business community.
Mr Gardiner presented the main Link award to First Trust Bank for its work with ChildLine Northern Ireland.
He said: “Business support for local charities is becoming ever more sophisticated. Companies realise that it is not just about handing over a cheque. Being involved with the work of a charity presents great opportunities for staff development, staff motivation, and innovative ideas.
"Involvement with local charities, voluntary and community organisations is a great way for local businesses to develop links with their local communities.
“It is important that charities learn what they can from businesses by working alongside them in genuine partnerships. Especially so, in sectors like the social economy, which require a combination of business skills, community knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship."
The NICVA Link awards event, now in its 18th year, allows voluntary, community and charity organisations to acknowledge the support they receive from the local business community, clubs and schools.
There are seven categories of award – the main link award (for outstanding contribution), support for small, medium and large charities awards, innovation, challenge and clubs, societies, schools awards.
