Cross-border waste awareness campaign launched
The British and Irish governments have launched a major advertising campaign today aimed at highlighting the benefits of reducing, recycling and re-using waste.
The €2.5 million (£1.7 million) joint campaign has been created to promote and sustain the environmental wellbeing of the border regions through improving water quality and putting in place waste management strategies.
Environment Minister Angela Smith said the real challenge facing both governments was to create "a new culture which questions how and why we produce waste and puts systems in place to transform the materials we discard into products we desire".
"It is essential that both governments work in an effective manner to ensure that we find solutions for our common waste problems on both diversion of waste from landfill and producer responsibility for materials such as packaging and tyres. That is why this campaign is very timely and its focus on the border so appropriate," the Minister added.
The new campaign builds on previous 'Wake up to Waste' and 'Race Against Waste' campaigns in both Northern Ireland and the Republic bringing together current communications activities for waste awareness developed to implement the waste management strategy and waste management plans for both regions.
