More NI companies set to boost staff numbers: survey

Demand for workers continues to grow in Northern Ireland, with 10% more businesses looking to recruit staff this quarter than for the same period last year, according to a new survey published today.

Manpower's Employment Outlook Survey found that, for the final quarter of 2004, almost a quarter of Northern Ireland's employers (23%) had unfilled vacancies - far ahead of the national average of 18%.

Alison McLeod, group business manager for Manpower in Northern Ireland,

said that there was a "distinct mood of optimism" among employers, with the commercial and industrial sectors reporting a marked rise in job vacancies.

Across the UK, employers in transport and communications, finance and business services, and in manufacturing all confirmed figures above the national average.

Agriculture was the only sector to flout the trend, witnessing a 9% dip over the last quarter as it continues to suffer a year-on-year decline.

Regionally, the south west of England tops the table with 32% of employers saying they intend to expand their workforce, while the West Midlands, London and Scotland projected an 8% rise.
