Youth remanded in custody following road death

A 17-year-old youth has been remanded in custody in connection with the death of an elderly man in Co Down on Monday.

Patrick McVicker, 69, from Lisvarna Heights in the Lower Falls area of Belfast, died after being knocked down as he crossed a road in Newcastle.

Brendan Cope, of Burrendale Park Road in Newcastle, who appeared before Newtownards Magistrates Court today, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was also charged with driving away from the scene of an accident and failing to report it, as well as driving while disqualified.

Two other teenagers have been released while further enquiries are carried out.
