Belfast gets chance to see Cook's 'Endeavour' up close
Belfast will be the latest port of call tomorrow for a replica of the ship that carried 18th century explorer James Cook into history.
The HM Bark Endeavour, on its first trip to the city as part of its round-Britain voyage, is an exact reproduction of the one used by Cook in his epic voyages to the south Pacific and Australasia in the late 1760s.
The High Sheriff of Belfast, Councillor Ruth Patterson, will officially welcome the boat and visitors will be able to view it from Saturday until Sunday September 19.
Speaking ahead of Endeavour's arrival, Ms Patterson said: "The vision and the spirit of exploration displayed by men such as Lieutenant James Cook opened up new vistas on the world and epitomised the golden age of scientific discovery, pushing back not only the frontiers of science but also those of the known world at that time."
A Belfast man so nearly took part in that historic voyage but, as fate would have it, stepped back from the brink of scientific distinction.
Belfast man John Templeton was invited on the voyage by Sir Joseph Banks, one of the founders of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. However, Templeton declined to join his patron and remained in Ireland.
Templeton was not to be overlooked by history as he is now remembered as the driving force behind the development of Belfast’s Royal Botanical Gardens.
