Unique 'Place' for built environment opens in Belfast
A centre dedicated to the built environment, the first of its kind in Northern Ireland, has opened in Belfast.
The 'Place' centre – an acronym for Planning Landscape Architecture Community Environment – aims to increase public awareness of the need to improve the quality of Northern Ireland’s built environment.
A joint venture between Belfast City Council and the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, the centre will provide an exhibition space, and will also hold a variety of events, such as lectures, workshops, seminars and educational programmes. It is anticipated that the facilities will encourage community participation and also give people the power to better understand their environment.
Opening the centre last night, Lord Mayor of Belfast Tom Ekin said that the scheme was necessary as the quality of the built environment throughout Northern Ireland had "lagged well behind that of our European counterparts".
He added that the centre would act as a focal point for collaboration between building professionals, the arts sector and the public.
NIO Culture Minister, Angela Smith, said that the opening was "very timely" as it would support efforts to "encourage a wider public awareness and appreciation of the values and benefits of good design”.
