Police launch campaign to improve safety on NI roads

Police will put out all the stops this weekend in a two-day operation aimed at reducing the staggering road death toll in Northern Ireland.

Operation Viper starts tomorrow and aims to target careless and dangerous driving, motorists on drink and drugs, excess speed and non-use of seat belts.

Chief Inspector Douglas Hogg, who is commanding the operation, said that despite advertising and road safety campaigns the message was "still not getting through to drivers". So far this year, 70 people have died compared with 63 during the same period last year.

The deteriorating situation in the north is being paralleled in the Republic. In a 24-hour period over last weekend, 10 people tragically died in road traffic accidents south of the border. This brings the number of people killed on the roads so far this year to 272 - nearly 40 more than in the same period last year.
