Orde to make final decision on future of full-time reserve
Chief Constable Hugh Orde is to sit down with his senior officers today to discuss the future of the PSNI's full-time reserve.
Mr Orde will meet with his senior command team on Tuesday before making an announcement at a meeting of the Policing Board on Thursday on the future of around 1,600 reserve officers.
Yesterday, Mr Orde met a DUP delegation at police headquarters led by leader Ian Paisley. Mr Paisley warned that the PSNI could not afford to lose so many officers. However, Mr Paisley conceded that the Chief Constable had a tough choice to make and that the next two days would be critical.
If the decision is made to cut 1,600 posts, the PSNI would see its full-time reserve numbers drop by around half.
According to the latest PSNI statistics, police numbers stand close to the 7,500 regular officers and 2,500 part-timers recommended under Patten as part of the Good Friday Agreement.

Ards Man Fined For Dumping Waste At Bonfire Site
A 51-year-old has been fined for bonfire-related waste offences at Newtownards Magistrates' Court. Gareth Gill, of Abbot's Walk, Newtownards pleaded guilty to waste offences relating to a bonfire next to the electrical sub-station on the Circular Road in the town.

A man has been arrested and seven PSNI officers injured after a high speed car chase in west Belfast early this morning. The incident happened at around 1.20am when a police officer approached a vehicle on the Whiterock Road.

Blair pledges 'strong support' for PSNI
PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde has said that the Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed "strong support" for the new police service in the province. Mr Orde, who made the comments after a meeting with the prime minister this morning, also revealed that Mr Blair confirmed he would have the resources needed to carry out his job.
