Council adds 5,000 homes to paper recycling scheme
The next phase of Belfast City Council’s paper recycling scheme is currently being rolled out in the west of the city.
Some 5,000 residents of the Turf Lodge and Suffolk areas, as well as sections of the Glen Road and Upper Springfield Road, will soon receive a blue wheelie bin for paper recycling.
The bin can be used to recycle a wide range of paper products including newspapers and magazines, brochures and catalogues. The paper collected is then recycled into newsprint and eventually returns to residents as newspapers.
Martin Doherty, Waste Management Education and Promotions Manager, said: “Belfast City Council is working hard to meet recycling targets put in place by government and it is only through public participation in schemes such as this that we will raise our recycling rate to 25% by the end of next year. If used correctly, this new kerbside recycling scheme will go a long way to help achieve this target.”
Over the next few weeks a council representative will call to the door of each household set to receive a blue bin to explain the nature of the scheme. An information leaflet, designed to outline the range of paper materials that can be placed in the bin and to give the specific dates of the monthly collections, will also be distributed to every participating home.
