Residents to get say on motorway changes
Residents on the outskirts of Belfast are to have their say over plans to improve a section of the M2 motorway in Co Antrim.
The Roads Service will publish an Environmental Statement to explain the main impacts of the proposed improvements to the M2 motorway, between Sandyknowes and Greencastle junctions. This will initiate a 30-day consultation period, during which members of the public and statutory organisations will have the opportunity to comment on the proposals.
The Environmental Statement assesses the impact of the scheme on air quality, traffic noise and vibration, land use, landscape, cultural heritage, ecology, water quality and road users.
Roads Service plans to widen the city-bound carriageway to provide an additional third lane, between Sandyknowes and Greencastle and also widen the country-bound carriageway, through the Greencastle Interchange, to provide three lanes.
It is hoped that the widening of the city-bound carriageway will help to ease the conflicts between traffic already on the M2 approaching Sandyknowes, and traffic merging with the M2 at the same junction, and will provide greater capacity on the downhill section towards Greencastle.
Widening the country-bound carriageway, to three lanes over the Greencastle Interchange, will reduce similar problems of congestion at this location in the evening peak.
The Sandyknowes and Greencastle plans are one of three schemes which will form part of the £100 million Roads Service DBFO Package 1, along with the M1/Westlink Project and the Antrim Hospital slip roads. Construction is due to commence in 2007.

Local roads get record £80m spend
A record £80 million will be spent on structural roads maintenance this year across Northern Ireland. The figure was revealed by Deputy Divisional Roads Manager, Tom McCourt as he presented DRD Roads Service’s autumn report to Newtownabbey Borough Council. Mr McCourt said: "This is a huge increase in investment over previous years.

Three Lanes Closed Following M2 Collision
A two-vehicle crash on the M2 heading out of Belfast has caused huge delays for motorists. Three lanes of the M2 have been closed and it may be some time before the road is fully reopened. The lanes have been closed between Fortwilliam and Greencastle. Motorists are being advised pass the accident on the hard shoulder or use the M5.
