West Belfast brewery set to close
One of Northern Ireland's most famous breweries is to close with the loss of 85 jobs, it has been announced today.
Bass Ireland Ulster Brewery will cease production next January after management failed to find a buyer for its manufacturing facility in west Belfast.
In a statement on Tuesday, brewery owners, Interbrew UK, said it had been seeking a purchaser following the ending of a long-term contract to bottle soft drinks at the Glen Road plant.
Only last month, West Belfast MP Gerry Adams expressed anger at the news that the brewery had been put up for sale.
Mr Adams met senior shop stewards from the Brewery to discuss ways into attracting a buyer for the plant, however that seemingly came to nothing following today's announcement.
The west Belfast plant was founded in 1897 and brews and kegs Bass and Tennent's Lager as well as kegs of Stella Artois.
