Carroll starts in goal for NI
Manchester United outcast Roy Carroll is set to start in goal for Northern Ireland for the first time in 25 games tonight.
Announcing his team for Wednesday night's game against Switzerland, manager Lawrie Sanchez said he was starting with Carroll ahead of Birmingham's Maik Taylor because Fermanagh man Roy Carroll had something to prove to both his club side and internationally.
The Man Utd star has dropped to third in the pecking order at Old Trafford after failing to make the bench for Sir Alex Ferguson's men in the opening league game of the season at Chelsea on Sunday.
"Roy has stuff to prove," Sanchez said. "The only way you can help your cause is by playing football matches.
"We've a great group of matches to be played, and if he can get himself in and be part of it and show what he can do, then that will help."
Birmingham goalkeeper Taylor, who has captained Northern Ireland in recent games due to the previous absences of Aaron Hughes, is likely to feature in tonight's fixture in Zurich at some point.
Tonight's fixture is the last game for Northern Ireland before they open their 2006 World Cup qualifiers against Poland at Windsor Park next month.
The Northern Ireland team is: Carroll, A Hughes (Captain), Craigan, Williams, Capaldi, Gillespie, Johnson, Sonner, Elliott, Smith, Healy.
