Health services to benefit from spending relocation
NIO Minister Ian Pearson has announced his intention to target hospital waiting lists thanks to the re-allocation of government money.
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety is to receive £12 million to help address a number of key issues, including £6 million to further address waiting lists and £6 million to allow measures to be put in place at an early stage in the year to boost bed capacity during the winter months.
Mr Pearson explained that the resources available for re-distribution had arisen through changes in expenditure expectations identified by departments.
Turning to the allocations, the Minister said: “The amounts being announced today are targeted at those areas of public services which can benefit immediately from additional funding, in particular, Health and Education.”
The Department of Education will receive £9 million to allow for the "acceleration of planned maintenance and building improvement schemes in areas of greatest need".
Around £11.5 million will go the Department of Social Development to help address pressures in a number of areas, including Welfare Reform, urban regeneration and the Special Purchase of Evacuated Dwellings (SPED) scheme.
"The amounts re-distributed today are not additional to Northern Ireland, but represent good financial management in re-directing funding to those areas of public services with the highest priority," the Minister added.

£100 million boost for Ulster Hospital
Health Minister Shaun Woodward has announced £100 million for the first phase of investment for the Ulster Hospital. This money will provide seven new theatres, a 16-bed critical care unit, new laboratories and a sterile services department. In addition, a new state-of-the-art renal unit and maternity unit are currently being built.

Almost Five Million Cigarettes Seized By Police
A significant haul of nearly five million cigarettes and almost 700kg of tobacco has been seized as part of a major operation by police and customs officers in Northern Ireland. The illicit material, worth an estimated £1.9m in duty and taxes that would have been lost, was uncovered during searches in the Banbridge, Carryduff and Ballyclare areas.

Five New Coronavirus Cases Confirmed
Five new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Northern Ireland. The Public Health Agency confirmed the further spread of the flu-like virus on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the region to 12. The search is on to trace people who have been in contact with the latest cases.
