War heroes return overseas to relive past glories
A Northern Ireland WWII veteran has made an emotional trip to Italy to be reunited with the friend who helped him during the war.
A grant of £1,300 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Heroes Return programme allowed Thomas James, his wife Kathleen and daughter Iris to return to Marraddi in Italy last month where he served as a private in the 133rd Division of the Territorial Army.
Mr James is one of eight veterans receiving grants under the Heroes Return scheme. Today’s round of grants, totalling £6,400, is allowing veterans, widows, wives and carers to make pilgrimages to the battlefields across Europe and beyond.
Announcing the grants Breidge Gadd, one of the Big Lottery Fund’s Northern Ireland Board Members, said: “The Big Lottery Fund is well aware of the tremendous public support for the Heroes Return Scheme. Helping veterans to return to their theatres of action is a fitting tribute by lottery players to the sacrifices which these men made during the Second World War."
Veterans across Ireland can apply to the Heroes Return scheme as part of a veterans group or as individuals embarking on their own overseas commemorative trip.
If you would like to revisit a place where you or your partner served during the war, please contact the Heroes Return hotline on 0800 169 2277 to discuss claiming a grant.
