Residents protest over asbestos plans

Several hundred people have gathered outside a Crumlin community centre last night to protest over plans to store asbestos near the town.

Belfast company, Eastwood Demolition, has secured planning permission to use its existing landfill site at Crosshill to store asbestos in sealed containers before shipping it to Scotland for disposal.

However, disapproval from local residents led to a delegation from the company to arrange a meeting with residents to discuss their plans.

Speaking on behalf of the Eastwood family on BBC Radio Ulster on Thursday, Suzanne Eastwood said she could understand the fear the local community had, but that it was based on misinformation.

"We are prepared for our family to live next to this site and I can guarantee the safety of any family who live near this site," she added.

However, Oliver Frawley of the Crumlin Against Asbestos group said the community felt it had not been properly consulted about the plans and that if planners did not change the decision, they may go to court in an attempt to overturn it.
