McIlroy Completes Career Grand Slam With Masters Triumph

Rory McIlroy has secured a historic victory at the 2025 Masters Tournament, completing a career Grand Slam after a tense play-off against England's Justin Rose.

McIlroy's triumph marks his fifth major championship title, adding the coveted Green Jacket to his previous wins at the US Open (2011), the Open Championship (2014), and the PGA Championship (2012 and 2014).

This victory sees him join an illustrious group of just five other golfers – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods – who have achieved the career Grand Slam by winning all four major championships.

The final round proved to be a captivating affair. McIlroy, who began the day with a two-shot advantage, faced challenges, including a double bogey. However, the Holywood native demonstrated remarkable resilience to recover and ultimately force a play-off with Rose, who had mounted a spirited comeback.

In the sudden-death play-off, McIlroy delivered a crucial approach shot, leaving himself a short birdie putt to secure the momentous victory. Visibly emotional, McIlroy celebrated the win, culminating his long-standing ambition of claiming the Masters title and a place in golf's most elite circle.

Following McIlroy's historic achievement, Ulster Unionist Party MLA Mike Nesbitt has called for him to be knighted. In a statement released earlier today, Mr Nesbitt said: "Rory McIlroy's achievement in completing the career Grand Slam is truly exceptional and a moment of immense pride for Northern Ireland. His dedication, skill, and sportsmanship have made him a global icon. I believe it would be fitting for His Majesty King Charles III to recognise this unparalleled accomplishment with a knighthood."
