Elderly Man Arrested Over Attempted Stabbing In Carrickfergus

Detectives are appealing for information following a report of an attempted stabbing in the Scotch Quarter area of Carrickfergus yesterday evening, Wednesday 9th April.

Detective Sergeant McDowell said: "At approximately 7.40pm, we received a report that a man carrying a knife had tried to gain access to a property in the Scotch Quarter area.

"Two people who were in the property at the time were injured while trying to prevent the man from entering.

"Officers attended and the man, who was located in a nearby address became hostile towards police and a Conducted Energy Device (CED) was deployed by specially trained officers to prevent any harm being caused to persons present.

"The man, aged in his 70s, was subsequently arrested on a number of offences including attempted murder and has been taken to police custody where he remains at this time.

"As is normal procedure the Police Ombudsman’s Office has been informed of the incident.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the attack or anyone with CCTV or other footage that could assist enquiries to contact detectives on 101 quoting reference 1765 09/04/25."

Police Cancel Appeal For Missing Omagh Man
Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.

Man arrested in connection with 1981 murder
Detectives investigating the murder of a nine-year-old girl in Co Down nearly 25 years ago have today arrested a man on suspicion of her murder. Jennifer Cardy was discovered dead by two fishermen at McKee's Dam near Hillsborough in 1981 after being snatched as she cycled to a friend's house on 12 August that same year.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.
