Firefighters Continue To Battle Mourne Mountains Wildfire
Eight appliances and more than 50 firefighter remain at the scene of a wildfire near Bloody Bridge in the Mourne Mountains.
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) worked through yesterday evening and into this morning to respond to a surge in emergency calls across Northern Ireland, including numerous wildfires. The NIFRS Regional Control Room received a total of 240 calls yesterday, with 27 of the 148 incidents requiring mobilisation involving wildfires.
The NIFRS has indicated that firefighting operations in this area are expected to continue throughout today. The fire service is urgently appealing to the public to stay away from the Bloody Bridge area and to avoid hill walking in the surrounding mountains. Residents in the Newcastle vicinity are also being advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the NIFRS confirmed that wildfires in the Sawel Mountain area of Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone, and on the Carncullagh Road in the Dervock area have now been successfully dealt with.
In addition to the wildfires, firefighters responded to other emergencies overnight, including a "well-developed" kitchen fire that had spread to the attic of a house in Banbridge and a large shed fire in Hillsborough in the early hours of this morning.
An amber weather warning for wildfires remains in place across Northern Ireland. The NIFRS is urging the public to follow fire safety advice and remain vigilant to the risk of fire in the countryside. They are also reminding people that if they see a fire, they should call 999 immediately.
