Man Jailed For Human Trafficking And Sexual Exploitation
61-year-old Derek Brown has been sentenced to six years in prison for human trafficking, controlling prostitution for gain, sexual assault, paying for sexual services, and drug-related offences. He appeared before Craigavon Crown Court on Wednesday, 06 March 2025.
Brown will serve half of his sentence in custody and the remaining half on license.
Welcoming the sentencing, Detective Inspector Rachel Miskelly, from the PSNI's Organised Crime Branch, said: "The defendant was suspected of trafficking females in the Belfast area for sexual exploitation. He would supply them with drugs, using this as a means of controlling them."
The investigation, which began in March 2021, revealed that vulnerable young women, frequently reported missing, were repeatedly found at Brown's residence, often under the influence of drugs.
"Brown was suspected of exploiting four young women, whom he controlled by supplying them with drugs in return for meeting with sex buyers. He himself also engaged in sexual acts with the women," Detective Inspector Miskelly said. Initially, the women were reluctant to provide statements, with some viewing Brown as a "father-type figure." However, this changed following the death of one of the victims.
"The courage of the young women who have spoken up is truly inspirational, and in stark contrast to the appalling actions of Derek Brown," said Detective Inspector Miskelly.
Brown was convicted in September of 12 offences following collaboration between the police and the Public Prosecution Service.
Detective Inspector Miskelly urged anyone who has experienced abuse or is currently being abused to come forward. She also asked the public to be aware of the signs of human trafficking and to report any concerns to the police.
"I'm asking anyone who has been abused, or is being abused, to take the first step and speak to us. I promise we will treat you with the sensitivity and respect you deserve. We will listen to you, and we will help you," she said.
For assistance, individuals can contact the police on 101, or in emergencies, call 999. The Modern Slavery Helpline can also be reached at 0800 012 1700.
