Belfast Council Seeks Views On Extended Park Opening Hours
Belfast City Council is seeking feedback from residents, community groups, and park users on a proposed pilot scheme to extend the opening hours of five key parks in the city.
The consultation will focus on Ormeau Park, Falls Park, Woodvale Park, Botanic Gardens, and Belmont Park.
Currently, Belfast's parks operate on a "dawn to dusk" schedule, extending to 10 pm in summer. Recent lighting improvements in some parks have created the opportunity to trial longer opening hours, increasing accessibility.
Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the council's People and Communities Committee, said: "Our parks and green spaces are vital to our city, offering spaces for recreation, exercise and social connection. Extending opening hours could allow more people to enjoy these spaces later in the day."
She emphasised the need to balance accessibility with safety, environmental impact, and community feedback, encouraging residents to share their views. Residents can participate by completing online surveys, with dedicated surveys available for each park. Drop-in sessions will also be held for in-person feedback.
These sessions will be held at:
• Woodvale Park – Wednesday 5 March 2025, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm
• Falls Park Bowling Pavilion – Wednesday 12 March 2025, from 4pm to 8pm
• Ormeau Park Bowling Pavilion – Thursday 20 March 2025, from 4pm to 8pm
• Belmont Park, CIYMS Sports Club, Circular Road – Thursday 27 March 2025, from 4pm to 8pm
• Botanic Gardens, College Park – Thursday 3 April 2025, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm
Alternatively, printed versions of the survey can be collected at these information sessions or requested by emailing: parksinfo@belfastcity.gov.uk
Once the consultation closes, responses will be reviewed and findings will be presented to elected members alongside recommendations for trialling extended opening hours. If approved and funding is secured, a pilot scheme will run for an agreed period, during which the new arrangements will be monitored. A follow-up consultation will then assess the impact before any final decisions are made.
