FSB voices hopes for resolution to civil service strike

A delegation from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has today met with senior officials from Department of Finance & Personnel and the DVTA on the civil service.

The FSB voiced its hope that the dispute with Nipsa could be resolved before Northern Ireland suffered major "job losses and business closures".

The body also expressed its concerns over the issuing of Temporary Exemption certificates for drivers who are unable to get MOT tests. The delegation said that they had been assured that the DVTA compliance team, along with the PSNI, would be checking vehicles for their roadworthiness.

Glyn Roberts, FSB Parliamentary Officer, said: “We had a useful update on the current negotiations from the DFP and from DVTA on their contingency plans for dealing with the 100,000 MOT and Driving Examination cancellations.”

The FSB said it was awaiting a response from Ian Pearson on the proposals that were made at last Friday's meeting with Nipsa. The group said that it hoped the proposals would "contribute to a positive outcome”.

Nipsa began its 33-week long strike over a pay dispute stemming from cost of living rates. The government has imposed a pay package which will add 3.67% to the wage bill of the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
