Chief Constable Condemns Attacks On Police Officers

PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has condemned attacks on police officers in Derry City and Strabane over the weekend.

"It's absolutely shocking that nine officers were injured while on duty in Derry City and Strabane district over the weekend," Chief Constable Boutcher said. "My message to those who think this behaviour is acceptable is that, unequivocally, it is not; and it should never be seen as 'part of the job'."

The Chief Constable praised the resilience of the officers, all of whom remained on duty despite their injuries. "I'm proud of the resilience shown by these officers, all of whom remained on duty, serving their community," he said.

Four people have already been charged in connection with these incidents and will appear in court. "Four people have already been charged to court, where I trust that they will feel the full force of our justice system," Chief Constable Boutcher said.

He condemned the attacks, stating that they were "completely intolerable."

"Police officers and staff do a vital job and whilst they come to work knowing on any given day they could be faced with difficult and dangerous situations, it is completely intolerable that we should be physically attacked," he said.

Chief Constable Boutcher also stated that he will continue to liaise with the Department of Justice regarding sentencing guidelines for those who assault police officers.
