Security Alert Ends In South Belfast

A security alert that prompted the evacuation of homes in the Empire Street area of South Belfast on Wednesday has ended.

Army Technical Officers (ATO) were called to the scene and made safe a suspicious object, believed to be an improvised grenade. The object has since been removed, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

A man in his 50s, arrested as part of the investigation, remains in police custody.

Chief Inspector Mark Conway said: "Our investigation is at an early stage however we are aware of inaccurate online speculation regarding this alert and we advise the public not rely on such sources for their information. Once again we thank the community for their patience and co-operation while we carried out this public safety operation. A further update will be provided in due course."

The security alert began on Wednesday after a suspicious object was discovered in the area, leading to the evacuation of a number of homes. Police had advised motorists to avoid the area during the operation.

Security Alert Launched In Co Tyrone
The PSNI have launched a security alert in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. A suspicious object was discovered in the Fairmount Park area on Wednesday, 17 January. The road has been closed and a number of residents have been evacuated from their homes. No further information has been released.

Police Station Alert Discovered To Be A Hoax
A security alert has ended after a suspicious object found in a car close to an east Belfast police station was declared an "elaborate hoax". Residents in the Woodstock Road area had to evacuate their homes at about 21:00 on Sunday evening, while nearby Church services were also interrupted.

Residents Return To Homes After Security Alert In L'Derry
Residents in L'Derry have returned to their homes following a security alert. The alert started at around 10.35pm on Sunday, 03 June, after a suspicious object was discovered the the garden of a house in Fergleen Park in the Galliagh area. Army bomb experts attended the scene and the object was made safe by a controlled explosion.

Security Alert Underway In Belfast
A security alert is currently underway in Belfast. It is understood there have been reports of a suspicious object found in the Tates Avenue area of the city. As a result, the road has been closed between Boucher Road roundabout and Lorne Street. Police and army bomb experts are in attendance at the scene. No other details have been released.

Suspicious Object Sparks Antrim Security Alert
Police are currently dealing with a security alert in County Antrim. The discovery of a suspicious object sparked the operation on the A6 Belfast Road on Thursday 31 January. The road has been closed between the New Lodge and Rathmore roads. Diversions are in place and airport traffic is not likely to be affected.
