Nesbitt Praises Vital Role of Advanced Nurse Practitioners
Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has highlighted the significant contribution of Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) in supporting GPs and facilitating health transformation in Northern Ireland.
ANPs play a crucial role in the healthcare system, providing advanced care to patients across various settings. With a Master's level degree in Advanced Nursing Practice, they possess the expertise to assess, diagnose, treat, and refer patients with undifferentiated diagnoses.
"Addressing health inequalities is one of my top priorities," said Minister Nesbitt. "I commend the valuable expertise of our Advanced Nurse Practitioners in caring for people with complex health needs." He acknowledged the significant pressures facing Primary Care, including increased workload and workforce challenges, and recognized the critical role of ANPs in supporting GPs and improving patient outcomes.
Minister Nesbitt made these comments during a visit to Clough Surgery, where he met with ANPs to discuss their role and function within Primary Care. He was accompanied by Chief Nursing Officer Professor Maria McIlgorm and Chief Medical Officer Professor Sir Michael McBride.
Dr Alex Greer, Senior Partner at Clough Surgery, emphasized the importance of ANPs within the modern healthcare team: "ANPs are an integral part of the modern primary healthcare team." He highlighted the importance of training programs for ANPs and practice nurses to ensure a stable and skilled workforce for the future.
