Belfast Toy Appeal Brings Joy To Over 1,500 Children

Belfast City Council is celebrating the success of its 2024 Pre-Loved Toy Appeal.

Over 27 van loads of toys were collected from the city's recycling centres.

The toys were distributed to over 1,500 children in need across Belfast through East Belfast Mission and its charity partners.

The appeal, run in partnership with East Belfast Mission, highlights the council's commitment to a circular economy by promoting the reuse of toys and reducing waste.

The council expressed its gratitude to the public for their generous donations.

Councillor Ruth Brooks, Chair of the People and Communities Committee, expressed her gratitude: "The success of this year's Pre-Loved Toy Appeal highlights the generosity of our residents and the power of collaboration. Thanks to their kindness, over 1,500 children received gifts this Christmas, spreading joy during a time when many families are struggling. This initiative not only strengthens our communities but also demonstrates the importance of reusing and recycling to reduce waste. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this effort." Michael Sloan, from East Belfast Mission, added: "This appeal has had an incredible impact, with over £50,000 worth of toys redistributed to families in need. The project also brought together more than 90 volunteers, who played a crucial role in sorting and distributing donations. It's inspiring to see how the appeal continues to grow each year, making a real difference in the lives of children and families. We're grateful for the council's partnership and the community's support."

This year's appeal also had significant environmental benefits, diverting approximately 10 tonnes of toys from disposal and saving an estimated 9 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions compared to purchasing new items.

Belfast recycling centres and amenity sites will also be closed on Wednesday, 1 January, reopening on Thursday, 2 January for your Christmas recycling, trees and additional household waste.

They can accept a wide range of recyclables, as well as additional household waste that can't be recycled. Real Christmas trees can also be brought along for recycling, while smaller trees can be cut up and put in household brown bins.
