New Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner Appointed
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Hilary Benn, has appointed David Johnstone as the new Northern Ireland Veterans Commissioner.
Johnstone, a former officer in the Royal Irish Regiment (Reserves), will take up the role on 1 January 2025. The position is part-time and will last until 31 August 2026. The Veterans Commissioner's Office was established in 2020 to advocate for veterans' rights and ensure access to services. Johnstone will be responsible for continuing this work.
Before his appointment, Johnstone held various roles in the property industry and served as a senior executive in local football.

Couple Go On Trial Accused Of Murdering Granddaughter
The grandparents of a severely disabled teenage girl who died more than ten years ago have gone on trial at Belfast Crown Court accused of her murder. David Johnstone, 88, and his wife Sarah, 86, from Cranwood Drive in Glengormley, deny manslaughter and charges of child cruelty against their granddaughter Rebecca McKeown, 14, in March 2001.

New Presbyterian moderator is named
The Reverend David Clarke of Terrace Row Church in Coleraine has been named as the new moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. The 59-year-old, who is originally from Ballymena, received 14 votes out of the 21 Presbyteries who took part in yesterday's election.

NI's Veterans Commissioner Danny Kinahan Resigns
Northern Ireland's Veterans Commissioner Danny Kinahan has resigned. In a statement he said he "cannot provide the independent voice that veterans require". He said he stood down from the post following an "open and frank conversation" with Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn.
